Thursday September 11th, 2008

 

Brian

·      Begles

o       1st Friday of each month thru end of semester

o       Gift of $100 for Wilsons and we’re overdue from last semester

·      Mid-semester gathering—who can be in charge?

·      Budget/Forms & Procedures

o       BUDGET: Same as last year, minus $45 that we overspent

o       To avoid overspending email Brian, Beth, Richard with direct billing

o       Direct billing includes: Campus mail (including TME mail outs), printing (TME), catering

·      UGA Issues (e.g. new rules, etc)

o       No more overages or restrict the budget

o       Restrictions on what money can be spent on

o       Advice from Rachael reminds us that MESA always follows rules as they are intended and a lot of these restrictions were put in place due to abuses of other organizations, not us.

o       Can’t go over 10% of budget on food, but food for colloquia counts as programming

o       Moratorium on food right now, unless part of program 

 

Sharon

·      Tutoring/Community Outreach

o       Goal: not organize and run, just get people out and help when you can

o       Options:

§         Boys and Girls of Athens wants HW help from 4-6 M-TH

§         Cleveland Road Elementary—math night Nov 13th

§         Cedar Shoals HS – willing to pay for tutoring (or Richard’s class, laughter all around)

o       Send advertisement to listserv to get feedback about having a regular activity

o       We may be able to help with transportation for those who can’t drive

o       Connections with Clark County Math Coach

o       Issue: How to monitor our volunteers

·      Undergraduate representative elections

o       No nominations yet-- let’s have TA’s promote, we can nominate undergrads too.

·      Graduate writing retreat

o       Planning for 10-15 students involved

o       Send promotional info to see who is interested 

o       Needs help—first meeting bumped to October

o       Faculty supervisor—Jeremy (busy), Dorothy?, Anna (Brian will ask), Pat (busy)

 

Allyson

·      Membership status

o       Almost all graduates have renewed (Richard included).

o       Still missing some undergrads—the students currently student teaching have never been members, we need to make sure we hit all EMAT classes, TA’s need to remind undergraduates one more time.

·      Writing seminar

o       Meeting with interested graduate students this week to discuss/plan

o       How to arrange buying supplies—Brian has MESA check card

o       Ideas about content, email with any suggestions?

 

 

Richard

·      Finances

o       Current balance: $2735.93, $1499.20 is for the grant

o       Pending deposits: $431.24, $253.40

o       Pending MESA non-grant total: $1921.37

o       Total MESA Pending: $3420.57

o       Still missing some undergrads—the students currently student teaching have never been members, we need to make sure we hit all EMAT classes, TA’s need to remind undergraduates one more time.

·      Major Expenditures

o       $184.75: Journal subscriptions (Brian Gleason)

o       $528.29: NCTM Books (Ryan Fox)

o       $133.75: Food for MESA potluck (Chik-Fil-A)

o       $60.79: Ice Cream Social (Eric Gold)

o       $266.25: Luncheon for departing faculty (UGa Food Services)

·     Richard moves to leave MESA debit card with Brian so that board members have easy access.

·      Idea from Denise. For college’s 100th anniversary, panel discussion/interviews of senior professors.

             

Ryan

·      GCTM Status:

o       Undergraduates get free membership with professor signature, full time graduate students get free electronic or half cost for full membership. Soon this will be on website

o        GCTM Conference for students is $5—free lodging available for 40 students 

·     NCTM Book sale will be Nov 4-6th (Tues.- Thurs.) Need $800 up front?

·     Griffin Campus

o       Send representative to Griffin

o       50 math ed students

o       What can we do via email? TME subscription, send video of colloquia, video conference?

o       It’s probably best for them to form their own affiliate.

·      Delegate Assembly is April 22-23, need to book flight now

·      NCTM conference is April 22-25

 

Ryan/Diana TME

·      2nd issue of volume 18 will be late December

o       Undergraduate distribution via “come and get” policy.

·     Need $200-250 per issue, last year total cost were $480

·     8 students enrolled in TME seminar
