Abstract:
This paper suggests a compatibility between Kaput's model of multiple linked representation systems and von Glasersfeld's constructivism. In particular, an example of the processes of translations between mathematical representation systems using functions in one variable is developed to demonstrate this compatibility. The constructivist refers to this multiple linked representation system as an external system of presentations. In the example discussed, the constructivist would elevate the significance of the examples and experiences that the learner draws on to create meaning for function. The author suggests the application of Kaput's model as a design feature for technological learning tools, and discusses their use in the classroom.
