The Historical Development of the Concept of Angle PDF
This is the first of a two part article on the history of the concept of angle. The author discusses the development of the concept of angle in terms of its utility as well as its definition. Ancient cultures used angles to solve problems, primarily to investigate the movement of the stars and planets as a way to predict seasonal weather changes, predict the future, construct buildings, and plan rituals. The early Greeks were the first to attempt to define angle, but there was no requirement that angles have straight sides. Nevertheless, as early as 300 BC, what we now know as trigonometric ratios were used by Aristarchus.
